Mind Your Address

It just doesn’t seem so difficult to figure this out, but candidates keep using their personal email addresses that seem to date back to their college days.  Of course, there wasn’t email when I was in college…different story.

Here is one I came across today:

shovelhead@yahoo.com

Unbelievable.  Instead of considering his candidacy, I am left with thoughts of the potentially peculiar shape of his head.

Personal branding may well be more important to the job applicant than it is to the small business, corporation or non-profit. And, today, there are tons of online tools to help you create a personal brand that will help you stand out from the crowd (and net you a job faster).

Derrick, you’ve hit on just one aspect of this branding – but likely the most important one. Whether it’s called “Brand You” or “Inc. Yourself” or any other term your brand can’t be “Shovelhead” when you’re looking for a job.

By the way, Dan Schawbel writes a darn good blog about personal branding. We have no connection from him, take no fees from him – but he does a good job. So, go read it (and keep reading Derrick here at the Hire Sense).

    Derrick,

My personal favorite from about 18 months go sent to me by a candidate for a senior level IT job:

    gophersuck_badgerules@xxx.com

As you can expect, it did not go over well with my or my client who is a U of M biz school grad.

Thanks gentlemen for the comments. Michael – I agree about Dan Schawbel’s blog. I have it in my RSS reader and it is excellent for branding YOURSELF. That is a new trend in today’s world that is certain to expand.

Paul – I laughed out loud over the email address as I am aware of your unnatural love for the local rodents. I, being from Ann Arbor, do not share such a love. However, to be clear – none of my email addresses disparage the Gophers or promote the Wolverines (especially after this past football season).

Hello-one thing: Maybe this person would have kicked a– in the medical sales field-only your idiosyncrasies got in the way of a potential great hire.
Think about it–If the passion and qualification and sales performance were there-why disqualify?? How did you get your start?? This is the trouble-everyone forgets where they came from–thank you..Ann R.
