Anecdote – Online Dating? Part 3

He’s back! Back in August I first posted on this employment ad respondent and then just a month later he emailed me again. I hadn’t heard a peep out of him for 2 months when out of the blue I received another email. This time he wasn’t inquiring about a position, but it seems I have made it onto his distribution list for garbage emails. I have received several emails (more than I care to count) about the latest sick child that AOL will donate 32ยข for every email forwarded to Microsoft will pay you $245 for every email you forward. You know, this is the glamorous side of sourcing… Read More

Anecdote – Tell Me What You’re Looking For

In a recent phone screen for a sales position, I asked a candidate to tell me how they believed their background fit the requirements of the position. Now mind you, the position required the candidates to listen effectively, build rapport, ask insightful questions and have excellent verbal communication skills. The candidate’s response: Tell me what you’re looking for and I will tell you if I can do it. Really, I didn’t need to go much further, but I did ask him a couple of other questions and received similar answers. So I ended the phone screen by stating, “That’s all the questions I have for you at this time. What… Read More

Who is the Toughest?

In a recent a recent Workforce Management newsletter it had quick article that caught my eye. It was titled: Who’s Tough and Who’s Not (sorry no link available) and looks to see what is the toughest group in corporate America. PsyMax Solutions, a human capital assessment company in Cleveland conducted a survey and reached its conclusions after studying the responses of more than 2,000 employees. It found that middle managers are the most resilient, are better able to accept criticism, manage stress and bounce back from frustration and disappointments.

Best Cities for Relocating

Through some of my sourcing efforts this past week I came across several lists for the top cities for relocating. The Employee Relocation Council (ERC) and Primacy Relocation have been conducting these survey’s for a few years. From what I found, they publish a yearly list of the top 50 cities for Families by market size and the top 100 cities for singles. Our home state of Minnesota did not place any cities in the top 50 for families, but Minneapolis/St. Paul came in at 77 on the list of top 100 cities for singles. Here is the criteria used for each of the lists: Families Tax Rates Average House… Read More

Anecdote – More Rapport

I was watching Selling Power Daily Report and today’s video interview is with Dan Seidman of Sales Autopsy. Dan is a sales trainer who has written a book by the same title which is a collection of sales horror stories. In today’s video he recalled a horror story that happened to a salesperson who was trying to build rapport with a new prospect who was the President of a company. The salesperson took 6 months trying to set up this meeting with this prospect through phone calls, snail mail and messages with the gatekeeper. Finally, he landed a face-to-face meeting: He was led into the President’s office which was very… Read More

Daylight Saving Time and Y2K?

Most peole do not put much thought into daylight saving time, until it is time to adjust your clocks. In SHRM’s recent newsletter, they offered a short article that got me thinking that there is more to it than this. A quick Google search revealed there are over 500,000 articles that come up when you search on daylight saving time. I had forgotten that the law was actually passed back in 2005 and at the time I was amazed as to why they were not going to implement the change until 2007. For decades, candy manufacturers have lobbied for a daylight saving time extension through Halloween. What is interesting about… Read More
