{"id":27430,"date":"2019-03-18T10:05:46","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T15:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/?p=27430"},"modified":"2019-05-16T13:50:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T18:50:49","slug":"interviewed-by-a-robot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2019\/03\/interviewed-by-a-robot\/","title":{"rendered":"Interviewed By A Robot"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"boldgrid-section\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-sm-12\">\n<h3 class=\"\">You&#8217;ve probably used the term &#8220;robot&#8221; to describe some of the people you have worked with or, in my case, some of the hiring managers with whom I interviewed over the years.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\">But I&#8217;m not talking metaphorically now.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-47442953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This BBC news article<\/a> introduces (is that the right word?) us to Tengai, the job interview robot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here is Tengai:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-27484\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Tengai-Robot-Interviewer.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Tengai-Robot-Interviewer.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Tengai-Robot-Interviewer.jpg?w=624&amp;ssl=1 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If Tengai is here, surely our robot overlords are not far off in the future.&nbsp; Can you imagine interacting with that robot on a serious job interview?&nbsp; The European company that has created Tengai explains their thoughts on the robot&#8217;s interactions:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">The firm has spent the past four years building a human-like computer interface that mimics the way we speak, as well as our subtle facial expressions. The idea, according to chief scientist Gabriel Skantze, is that &#8220;it feels much less scary or strange compared to a more traditional robot&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">A more traditional robot?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27485\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Terminator.jpg?resize=184%2C273\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"273\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The &#8220;less scary&#8221; robot does provide a unique perspective to hiring.&nbsp; I honestly think some form of initial robot interviewing is at hand &#8211; the article mentions a couple other companies launching in this space.&nbsp; The most difficult aspect to overcome, in hiring, is bias.&nbsp; We all have it and a significant portion of it is subconscious.&nbsp; Clearly robots are immune to this preferential pattern (I think).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The article does provide a point that often gets overlooked in the hiring process:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"\">\n<p class=\"\">She also points out that interviews &#8211; especially those in sectors where there is a skills shortage &#8211; can be as much about job seekers deciding whether or not they want to work for a company as the reverse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">The candidate is making a decision about your company also.&nbsp; Hiring is a two-way street where you have to &#8220;sell&#8221; the opportunity to the candidate.&nbsp; I would not feel comfortable entrusting that process to a robot.&nbsp; Taking it further, hiring salespeople would be difficult in that the robot cannot pick up on intuitive decisions.&nbsp; Can you envision this person selling for your company?&nbsp; Will your prospects buy from this salesperson?&nbsp; Does the candidate have the intangibles for sales success?&nbsp; I don&#8217;t see those questions being answered by a robot interview in the near future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I sure hope I am right about that last sentence!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a class=\"btn btn-pill btn-color-5 btn-glow\" href=\"#http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/contact-us\/\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Contact a Human&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;ve probably used the term &#8220;robot&#8221; to describe some of the people you have worked with or, in my case, some of the hiring managers with whom I interviewed over the years.
