{"id":2094,"date":"2009-08-13T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-13T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2009\/08\/overwritten-ads\/"},"modified":"2009-08-13T09:38:19","modified_gmt":"2009-08-13T14:38:19","slug":"overwritten-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2009\/08\/overwritten-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"Overwritten Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I keep an eye on the sales employment ads looking for trends, positions, companies and prospects.\u00a0 I admit it.\u00a0 One of the aspects that catches my attention is the sheer length of some of these ads.\u00a0 It seems apparent that some companies simple publish their internal, HR-drive job descriptions as an employment ad.\u00a0 Mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Ads that incorporate this style read as an onerous task list as opposed to describing the opportunity and, more importantly, describing the ideal salesperson in his or her terms.\u00a0 The salesperson should read the ad and think to themselves, \u201cThose are my skills, those are my strengths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many ads like to list the reporting requirements of the position.\u00a0 This task is assumed in sales \u2013 you have to provide a forecast, you have to update the CRM package, you have to keep notes.\u00a0 The specifics of these tasks are not required in the ad.\u00a0 In fact, they create word bloat in the ad.\u00a0 Don\u2019t waste the space.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a prime example from an ad:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>6.\u00a0 Engage service delivery owners within the company coordinating mutual stakeholders meetings for repetitive or client initiated strategic business issues or launching of a new\/additional service.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Look up \u201cbloviation\u201d in the dictionary and you will find this ad.\u00a0 Couldn\u2019t the above quote simply state something like \u201ccoordinate internal, strategic customer review meetings\u201d or something to that point?\u00a0 The example is so overwritten that I am not sure of the gist of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Concise, succinct writing is key when writing sales ads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I keep an eye on the sales employment ads looking for trends, positions, companies and prospects.\u00a0 I admit it.\u00a0 One of the aspects that catches my attention is the sheer length of some of these ads.\u00a0 It seems apparent that some companies simple publish their internal, HR-drive job descriptions as an employment ad.\u00a0 Mistake.
