{"id":1890,"date":"2009-02-11T08:44:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-11T14:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2009\/02\/surviving-an-email-storm\/"},"modified":"2009-02-11T05:52:11","modified_gmt":"2009-02-11T11:52:11","slug":"surviving-an-email-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2009\/02\/surviving-an-email-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Surviving An Email Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, the title is overly dramatic, but I did see a company encounter an email storm this week which was\u2026well, laughable.\u00a0 This is a large company with thousands of employees.\u00a0 One gentleman sent out an email about a specific account with a Word attachment.\u00a0 What he didn\u2019t know was that one of his distribution lists was wrong \u2013 it included <em>everyone<\/em> in the company.<\/p>\n<p>One person on his list replied to all about printing the document.\u00a0 That email started the storm.\u00a0 Person after person started replying to all to remove them from the email list.<\/p>\n<p>It gets better, the original author then sent out <em>another<\/em> email that simply stated \u201cplease reply if you received this email.\u201d\u00a0 Now it was a tsunami.\u00a0 People started replying to all to the point where it overburdened the email servers and the entire company email was delayed 4-6 hours.\u00a0 Of course this all happened in the morning so that email was effectively lost for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Brutal.\u00a0 One lesson here is to be judicious in your use of reply to all!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, the title is overly dramatic, but I did see a company encounter an email storm this week which was\u2026well, laughable.\u00a0 This is a large company with thousands of employees.\u00a0 One gentleman sent out an email about a specific account with a Word attachment.\u00a0 What he didn\u2019t know was that one of his distribution lists was wrong \u2013 it included everyone in the company.
