Dave Stein has a provocative post<\/a> regarding some recent poll data about sales executives.\u00a0 This is excellent:<\/p>\n

Top Five Reasons Executives Are Unhappy At Work<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Limited advancement opportunities (12.8%)<\/li>\n
  2. Lack of challenge\/personal growth (12.3%)<\/li>\n
  3. Compensation (11.7%)<\/li>\n
  4. Stress Level (7.7%)<\/li>\n
  5. Job Security (7.7%)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For sales executives, I believe there is another reason for unhappiness in their jobs: many don\u2019t have the capabilities to perform successfully.\u00a0 It\u2019s too much<\/em> of a challenge rather than lack of a challenge (indicated in number 2 above).<\/p>\n

    Here are two indicators that this is true:\u00a0 First, tenure of sales executives is getting shorter year after year.\u00a0\u00a0 These sales executives aren\u2019t leaving their jobs in less than two years because they\u2019ve been wildly successful.\u00a0 Second is the overall lack of performance of the sales people that work for these sales executives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    I couldn’t agree more with his analysis.\u00a0 We see this fact everyday in our business as we encounter sales managers who are ill-prepared for hiring and onramping new salespeople.<\/p>\n

    Sales management is one of the most difficult positions in any company.\u00a0 Salespeople, in very general terms, tend to be independent and noncompliant.\u00a0 They also carry the future of the company which makes their success mission critical.\u00a0 Talk about pressure on the manager.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
