{"id":1384,"date":"2008-01-18T10:53:26","date_gmt":"2008-01-18T16:53:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2008\/01\/fact-or-fiction-about-the-google-generation\/"},"modified":"2008-01-18T10:52:09","modified_gmt":"2008-01-18T16:52:09","slug":"fact-or-fiction-about-the-google-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2008\/01\/fact-or-fiction-about-the-google-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"Fact Or Fiction About The Google Generation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t heard that moniker until now &#8211; &#8220;Google Generation.&#8221;\u00a0 These are kids born after 1993 so they are a handful of year away from hitting the workplace.\u00a0 Yet, there is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/news.ars\/post\/20080118-the-google-generation-not-so-hot-at-googling-after-all.html\">some interesting research out there<\/a> that debunks some conventional wisdom and reinforces others.<\/p>\n<p>First the debunking (emphasis mine):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s true that young people prefer interactive systems to passive ones and that they are generally competent with technology, but it&#8217;s not true that students today are &#8220;expert searchers.&#8221; In fact, the report calls this &#8220;a dangerous myth.&#8221; Knowing how to use Facebook doesn&#8217;t make one an Internet search god, and the report concludes that a literature review shows no movement (either good or bad) in young people&#8217;s information skills over the last several decades. <strong>Choosing good search terms is a special problem for younger users<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/goldencompass.com\/blog\/\">Michael Benidt call your office.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now the accurate conventional wisdom:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>They like to cut-and-paste.<\/strong> &#8220;There is a lot of anecdotal evidence and plagiarism is a serious issue.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>They prefer visual information over text<\/strong>. &#8220;But text is still important&#8230; For library interfaces, there is evidence that multimedia can quickly lose its appeal, providing short-term novelty.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>They multitask all the time.<\/strong> &#8220;It is likely that being exposed to online media early in life may help to develop good parallel processing skills.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think &#8220;multitasking&#8221; is one of the fuzziest words in current business lexicon.\u00a0 I suspect there are some people who can juggle many tasks for a short period with average to slightly above average success.\u00a0 However, the expansion of this ability to be something more than it is leads to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/selectmetrix.com\/blogs\/2006\/09\/the-multitasking-myth\/\">the multitasking myth<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t heard that moniker until now &#8211; &#8220;Google Generation.&#8221;\u00a0 These are kids born after 1993 so they are a handful of year away from hitting the workplace.\u00a0 Yet, there is some interesting research out there that debunks some conventional wisdom and reinforces others.
