First off, I have an interest in the Boeing vs. Airbus rivalry. Boeing used to be a customer of mine in a previous role and I have seen their amazing production facility in Everett, WA. The building is unbelievable huge. Anyway, I caught up to this Foxnews.com article – Airbus CEO Dropped Trousers to Seal US Airways Airplane Order. Here is the money excerpt (emphasis mine): Pierson, who ran Airbus from 1985 to 1998, was at US Airways’ headquarters for what he thought would be a short meeting to tie up a 400-plane deal, the anecdote runs. At the last minute, US Airways’ then-chairman Stephen Wolf started arguing for a… Read More

Bob Rosner has a great riff on security at airports in his Working Wounded blog – Biz Travel Safety. To be clear, he is all for safe airline travel and even goes so far as to thank the screeners when he gets plucked from the line for an additional screening. I laughed at that line since I am invariably plucked from the line no matter what airport I am at (my wife laughs every time). An excerpt: For example, on my most recent flight I had my baggie full of gels and liquids out and ready to show anyone who wanted to know the secret for my youthful appearance. A… Read More

Full disclosure – I’m no economist. You wouldn’t have to know me long to realize that fact. However, our local Pioneer Press offers a quick read business article with a potpourri of short articles – Labor could reap rewards of political shifts. From the 1st story: Political shifts in the U.S., Europe and Asia increase the chances that 2007 will bring labor higher pay and stronger job protection after five years in which its share of economic gains fell….Wages in the dozen nations sharing the euro barely shifted last year even as the region, which expanded last week to include Slovenia, enjoyed its strongest growth in six years. “Economic data… Read More

It has been a while since we have done this Monday thing so here is something amusing to start your week. CareerJournal.com offers Drinking on the Clock Is OK for This Position. Opening graph: If drinking beer on the clock and traveling to Oktoberfest in Munich on the company dime sounds like a dream job, there are still nine days left to apply for the newly created post of chief beer officer at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel chain. I’ve been to Munich but not during Oktoberfest. I have also stayed at a handful of Four Points by Sheraton hotels. If they hire based on experience, I can probably… Read More

I’m having more fun today digging through online resumes and came across this intro to a cover letter: SPECIAL NOTICE:I ONLY accept 1099/C2C/Freelance Web Development assignments. No other offers of any sort or job description will be considered beyond what is stated below. Anything else will be considered SPAM and dealt with accordingly, up to and including reporting the offender to proper authorities. I’ve never seen anything of this sort in my lifetime. Nothing like indirectly threatening potential customers/employers!

This may be an old one, but it is a good way to end the week: A little field mouse was lost in a dense wood, unable to find his way out. He came upon a wise old owl sitting in a tree. “Please help me, wise old owl, how can I get out of this wood?” said the field mouse. “Easy,” said the owl, “Grow wings and fly out, as I do.” “But how can I grow wings?” asked the mouse. The owl looked at him haughtily, sniffed disdainfully, and said, “Don’t bother me with the details, I only advise on strategy.”

We are in the process of updated some of the technology side of The Hire Sense so our posting has been non-existent. We should be completely upgraded today and plan to be back on the beat on Thursday. In the meantime, I give you this story from foxnews.com – Personalized Bobbleheads Catching On Among Regular Folks. Seriously, you can order a bobblehead in your own likeness. Bobbleheads, those shaky-headed 3-D caricatures, have jiggled free of their mass-produced roots of an earlier generation. Once merely featureless figures decked out in team colors and handed out on game day, they now depict just about anyone who wants one.Even Trumbo, a Des Moines… Read More

If you think your job is tough, check out this article from CareerJournal.com – Santa-Shift Workers Wrestle Perfectionists. The article provides a glimpse into the Vermonters (is that correct?) who come down to New York City every Christmas season to sell their Christmas trees. A day in the life: But unlike full-time jobs, the Santa shift poses a unique challenge: working for a perfectionist — the customer — each with an exacting calculus on what amounts to a perfect Christmas purchase. Nothing seems to conjure a desire for perfection more than a Christmas tree. It has to be tall enough, small enough, full enough, sparse enough for ornaments, and shaped… Read More

The email covers are like Clark Griswold’s Jelly of the Month Club membership – they are the gift that keeps on giving. Scanning through recent resumes led me to this cover email statement: I currently am the best sale personality i have ever met. However i’m not loving my postion right now. I think this was supposed to be a joke. At least I hope so.

He’s back! Back in August I first posted on this employment ad respondent and then just a month later he emailed me again. I hadn’t heard a peep out of him for 2 months when out of the blue I received another email. This time he wasn’t inquiring about a position, but it seems I have made it onto his distribution list for garbage emails. I have received several emails (more than I care to count) about the latest sick child that AOL will donate 32ยข for every email forwarded to Microsoft will pay you $245 for every email you forward. You know, this is the glamorous side of sourcing… Read More
